David and I had a long friendship and frequently exchanged ideas, mainly David's, informally and at scientific meetings in the UK and abroad. On one particular occasion we found ourselves stranded in Colombia after a malaria meeting and managed to get separated at the airport check-in and ended up at different destinations!
